St. Petersburg is the second-largest city in the Tampa Bay Area, after Tampa. Combined with Clearwater, these cities make up the Tampa-St.Petersburg-Clearwater area. St. Petersburg is located on a peninsula between Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.
The city was founded in 1888 by John C. Williams and Peter Demens. The winner of a coin toss bet, Demens named the area after Saint Petersburg, Russia.
